Pirates too strong in paint for Bulldogs

GREENVILLE — Derrick Wiley had 19 points and Moussa Badiane added 17 on Friday night to lead East Carolina to a 76-59 win against Gardner-Webb.

Gabriel Mikulas scored 15 points for the Pirates (5-1), who shot 51 percent and took a 32-24 rebounding advantage. Badiane had seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

Brian Bender scored 17 points for Gardner-Webb (2-8), which committed 24 turnovers that led to 23 points for the Pirates.

East Carolina dominated inside. In addition to controlling the boards, the Pirates took a 44-16 edge in points in the paint. Badiane and Mikulas combined to go 12-for-15 from the floor.

The win improved ECU's home record to 5-0 on the season. The Pirates' only loss came on the road at the hands of George Mason.

ECU returns to action on Friday, Dec. 19, in an 7 p.m. home game against the Hampton Pirates. The meeting will mark a homecoming of sorts for Hampton associate head coach Richard Morgan, who served four years on Bill Herrion's staff in Greenville before joining the other band of Pirates after last season.

Hampton will also be coming into the game off a victory after coming from behind to defeat William & Mary 79-72 Friday night on the strength of of 33-point night by Devin Green.
