Never before have I talked so much East Carolina football during my summer travels.

Many of you know that I coach my daughter’s fastpitch softball team each year. We have several college prospects on our squad, and we have played and beaten some of the top teams on the East Coast.

We have a banner that we hang for our team’s games. Bonesville.net has been a sponsor over the last couple of years, so maybe that’s how some folks connect me to the Pirates. Others know that our softball team is from Greenville, and have seen me on the air when they come to town for a game. Still others aware of the connection to Greenville stumble onto the fact that I have a chance to cover ECU sports for a living.

Anyway, the talk this summer has been two-fold. Some want to talk about the upcoming season, and about new Pirates coach John Thompson.

Others are more interested in the future, desperate for any nugget of information about expansion and the Pirates chances to get into a Bowl Championship Series league.

I ran into a fellow sportscaster from Richmond in one tournament. He had called me early on during the Patrick Dosh recruiting sweepstakes. He had covered Dosh in high school, and told me that Pirate fans were in for a real treat.

I continue to be surprised at all of the interest ECU gets in the Tidewater area. I am originally from Chesapeake, and really enjoy going back that area to coach. Several Pirate fans, many with daughters on other teams, made it a point to talk Pirate athletics during that weekend.

A number of them told me they would be in town for the games, especially the North Carolina contest in October.

We were recently in Florence, SC, and I was reminded of my last trip to the Palmetto state. That tournament was rained out after we got down to Myrtle Beach last fall, but we were still able to find a sports bar to check out the Pirates on a satellite dish.

The summer certainly goes by too fast, but then again, I’m certainly ready for some Pirate football!

Football over the airwaves

My plans for the fall are beginning to finalize. I’ll be back for my 16th year with the Brian Bailey Show this fall on Cable 7 and on WCZI 98.3 FM in Greenville. The exact day and times for the show will be announced in the next couple of weeks.

The show will also be available on the Internet. Over the years we’ve had calls from as far away as Atlanta and somewhere in California.

I’m also getting the chance to return to the pregame show on 98.3. The Gameday Countdown will feature scores, interviews and anything and everything having to do with the art of tailgating this fall. The leading scorer in East Carolina history, Kevin Miller, will co-host the show with me.

The prename show is something I have truly missed, and I look forward to the opportunity again this season!
