GREENVILLE — East Carolina defeated Purdue, 7-1, in its first game in the 21st annual Keith LeClair Classic on Friday as starting pitcher Trey Yesavage was dominant with support from home runs by Carter Cunningham and Dixon Williams.
Yesavage (2-0) went eight scoreless innings and allowed just two hits while walking two and striking out 11.
Cunningham had a 2-run homer in a 3-run third inning for ECU (6-3).
Williams launched a solo homer in the fourth.
The Pirates added three runs in the eighth as Cunningham had a sacrifice fly, Jacob Starling had an RBI single to right center and Williams had a run-scoring ground out.
The Boilermakers (6-3) avoided a shutout on a home run by Logan Sutter off Jackson Dilorenzo in the ninth.
ECU had a 9-3 lead in hits as Ryley Johnson had two with a double and Cunningham was 2-for-3.
The Pirates take on Cal State-Fullerton (4-4) in the second game Saturday. The Titans were topped, 5-1, by Southeastern Louisiana (7-3) in Friday’s first game.
ECU and Cal State-Fullerton play 45 minutes after the completion of the Purdue-Southeastern Louisiana contest, which gets underway at 1 p.m.
