NORFOLK — Steven Meier hit a 1-out solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to lift Old Dominion to a 6-5 win over No 11 East Carolina on Tuesday.
The Pirates (5-3) started strong with a 3-run homer by Jacob Jenkins-Cowart in the first inning.
The Monarchs (5-3) got a 2-run blast from Alex Bouche in the bottom of the first to trail, 3-2.
Jenkins-Cowart came home on a ground out by Dixon Willians as ECU extended its lead to 4-2 in the third.
Meier hit his first round tripper of the game in the third.
A sacrifice fly by Kyle Edwards and an RBI single by Luke Waters gave the hosts a 5-4 lead in the fourth.
Carter Cunningham’s leadoff triple to center field in the eighth and Jacob Starling’s RBI double to left center tied the score at 5.
The Pirates were coming off a walk off win of their own, 10-9, against North Carolina before a crowd of 6,017 on Sunday. There were 404 on hand at ODU.
“Trap game, coming off an emotional weekend,” said ECU coach Cliff Godwin. “Coming here, we have to play better than them. We didn’t play good enough.”
The Pirates slipped to 0-3 on the road but will return home for the Keith LeClair Classic and a Friday matchup with Purdue (6-2) at 4:30 p.m.
Cal State-Fullerton and Southeastern Louisiana will get the annual event underway on Friday at noon.
