GREENVILLE — Dixon Williams scored on a sacrifice fly by Nathan Chrismon with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning as No. 11 East Carolina topped Cal State-Fullerton, 2-1, in the Keith LeClair Classic on Saturday.
The Pirates (7-3) are the only unbeaten team in the event at 2-0 as they take on Southeastern Louisiana (7-4) on Sunday at 1 p.m. ECU beat Purdue 7-1 on Friday.
The Boilermakers downed Southeastern Louisiana, 5-0, in the first game Saturday, improving to 7-3 going into a matchup with Cal State-Fullerton (4-5) on Sunday at 9 a.m.
ECU got effective pitching from Zach Root and Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman.
Root started and went seven innings. He allowed three hits and one earned run on a fourth-inning home run by Marcos Rosales while walking one and striking out 10.
Lunsford-Shenkman (1-1) held the Titans scoreless over the last four innings, yielding two hits and no walks while fanning seven.
“Root was special and Shenk was special,” said Pirates coach Cliff Godwin on the ECU radio network. “Obviously, we needed it.”
Cal State-Fullerton is coached by Jason Dietrich, former pitching coach for the Pirates.
“Deets (Dietrich) and their pitchers gave us everything we could handle,” Godwin said.
Colby Wallace scored the tying run in the eighth on an error after a single to right by Colby Wallace and a throwing error.
ECU outhit the Titans, 9-5, but left 11 on base compared to four for Cal State-Fullerton.
Wallace went 3-for-5 for the Pirates and Ryley Johnson was 2-for-5.
