GREENVILLE — East Carolina got two home runs and four RBIs from Alec Makarewicz in an 11-7 win over visiting Memphis on Sunday to complete a 3-game American Athletic Conference sweep.
The No. 14 Pirates (38-14, 15-6 AAC) remained a half-game behind first place Houston (31-20, 15-5) in the league standings.
ECU led 11-1 after six innings and withstood a late surge by the Tigers.
“We set the tone offensively,” said Pirates coach Cliff Godwin. “It just makes it really hard on the other team.”
Josh Moylan put the Pirates ahead to stay with a sacrifice fly in the first inning.
Jacob Jenkins-Cowart had a 2-run single in ECU’s 4-run second.
A 2-run homer by Makarewicz in the third gave the Pirates a 7-0 lead. He hit another 2-run homer in a 3-run sixth.
Memphis closed the gap with six runs over the last three frames, including a 2-run blast by Anthony Hansen in the ninth.
Lane Hoover, Jenkins-Cowart and Carter Cunningham had two hits each as ECU outhit the visitors, 13-8.
Six Pirate pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts with Danny Beal (5-1) credited with the win.
ECU takes a 7-game winning streak into a matchup with No. 13 Campbell (39-11) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. (ESPN+).
