GREENVILLE — A pitching duel transformed into a slugfest for No. 14 East Carolina in a 10-3 American Athletic Conference series-clinching win over Memphis on Senior Day at Clark-LeClair Stadium on Saturday.
The Pirates (37-14, 14-6 AAC) seek a sweep in the series finale on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Outfielder Lane Hoover as well as pitchers Carter Spivey and Garrett Saylor were recognized prior to the game on Senior Day.
Spivey (6-2) got the win with three and two-thirds innings of relief after Trey Yesavage started and held the Tigers (26-24, 8-12) scoreless for three and one-third.
Josh Moylan hit the first of his two home runs, a solo shot to right in the fifth inning, to give ECU a 1-0 lead and put the Pirates ahead to stay.
The Pirates added four runs in the seventh on a 2-run single by Luke Nowak and a 2-run homer by Carter Cunningham.
The power surge continued in the eighth with a 2-run homer by Moylan, a 2-run blast by Ryley Johnson and a solo homer by Cunningham.
“The offense just woke up,” said ECU coach Cliff Godwin on the Pirate radio network.
Jonah Sutton capped the scoring with a solo homer for Memphis in the ninth.
