WICHITA, KS — Host Wichita State took a doubleheader from No. 7 East Carolina on Saturday by scores of 7-0 and 8-3.
The sweep and Houston’s 9-3 loss at Memphis created a 3-way tie for first in the American Athletic Conference standings between the Cougars, Pirates and Shockers, who are all 7-4 in league play.
ECU (29-10) looks to avoid a series sweep and maintain at least a share of first in the AAC at Wichita State (23-15) on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Payton Tolle (7-1) pitched a complete game in the opener on Saturday, allowing just two hits and striking out 10 without a walk.
Jaden Gustafson and Matriciio Millan each had two RBIs in the first game. Chuck Ingram and Garrett Pennington each hit solo homers in the sixth inning for the Shockers.
Luke Nowak gave ECU a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first inning of the second game.
The Shockers tied the score in the bottom of the first on a solo shot by Ingram and went ahead to stay on David Herring’s solo blast in a 3-run second.
Tolle was designated hitter in the second game and had a 2-run single in a 4-run sixth inning.
Joe Berini had two hits and an RBI to lead the Pirates offensively in the second game.
