GREENVILLE — Josh Moylan and Cam Clonch hit home runs for No. 9 East Carolina to close out a 13-3 American Athletic Conference win over Cincinnati in seven innings on Sunday and complete a 3-game sweep of the Bearcats at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Clonch led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to right for the decisive 10-run margin and Garrett Saylor held the visitors scoreless in the top of the seventh to conclude the contest played before a crowd of 3,901.
Moylan had a 2-run homer in a 3-run fifth for ECU (28-8, 7-2 AAC).
The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Jacob Starling.
The Bearcats (15-22, 3-6) went up, 2-1, in the third as Tommy O’Connor had a run-scoring single and Kerrington Cross stole home.
The Pirates moved in front to stay with four runs in the bottom of the third and four more in the fourth.
Luke Nowak and Alec Makarewicz each had 2-run doubles in the third. Starling had a 2-run single in the fourth. Moylan came home on a passed ball and Nowak’s sacrifice fly provided a 9-2 lead. Carter Cunningham had a sacrifice fly in the fifth before Moylan’s blast.
Josh Grosz started for ECU and went four and two-thirds innings. He allowed three hits and three earned runs, including a solo homer by Cam Scheler in the fifth. Grosz walked four and struck out seven.
Danny Beal (2-1) was credited with the win with one and one-third innings of scoreless relief.
The Pirates had a 12-5 lead in hits as Moylan, Starling, Clonch and Justin Wilcoxen had two each.
ECU visits Charlotte (19-15) on Wednesday for a 6:05 p.m. start (ESPN+) at Truist Field, home of the Triple-A Charlotte Knights. The 49ers play at North Carolina on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
