GREENVILLE — No. 12 East Carolina completed a 3-game American Athletic Conference sweep of Central Florida in the rain on Friday as Justin Wilcoxen had a walk-off, bases-loaded single to left field with two out in the bottom of the 12th inning.
The Pirates improved to 24-8 overall, 4-2 in the AAC and 20-2 at Clark-LeClair Stadium with the 3-2 victory despite leaving 22 runners on base.
UCF (17-15, 1-5) led 2-0 through six innings as Knights football quarterback John Rhys Plumlee scored on a ground out in the third and Ben McCabe hit a solo homer to left in the sixth.
ECU evened the score in the seventh as Josh Moylan came home on a bunt single by Luke Nowak and Jacob Starling scored on a ground out by Alec Makarewicz.
There was an 80-minute rain delay with one out in the top of the 10th.
Lane Hoover walked to start the bottom of the 12th. Carter Cunningham moved Hoover to second with a sacrifice bunt. Moylan was intentionally walked and Starling was hit by a pitch with two out to load the bases.
Wilcoxen connected with an 0-2 pitch from Nick Viera (0-1) to end the game.
Landon Ginn (2-0) pitched the last two and two-thirds innings for the win. He allowed two hits and struck out five.
Josh Grosz started and went six innings. He yielded four hits and two earned runs while walking one and whiffing seven.
Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman turned in three and one-third scoreless frames, fanning a pair as ECU pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts.
The Pirates had a 13-8 lead in hits as Hoover, Moylan, Starling and Nowak had two each. ECU did not have an extra-base hit.
The Pirates host Old Dominion on Tuesday at 6 p.m. (ESPN+). The Monarchs are 22-7 going into a doubleheader with Southern Miss in Norfolk on Saturday.
