ELON — Jacob Starling set the tone with a first inning home run and No. 12 East Carolina went on to a 5-1 victory at Elon on Wednesday.
The Pirates (9-3) added a pair of runs in the second as Joey Berini stole third and scored on a throwing error. Ryley Johmso added a run-producing single up the middle for a 3-0 ECU lead.
Starling came home on a sacrifice bunt by Carter Cunningham in the eighth
The Pirates added a run in the ninth on a fielding error that allowed Berini to score.
The Phoenix committed three errors in falling to 7-6.
Zach Root (2-0) pitched five scoreless innings of relief for the win. Root allowed three hits and struck out three while walking one.
Starling, Berini, Justin Wilcoxen and Johnson each had two hits for ECU, which had a 9-7 lead in hits.
Justin Cassella had an RBI single for the hosts in the fourth.
The Pirates have a 3-game winning streak going into a 3-game series with Liberty (7-5) in Greenville that begins on Friday at 6 p.m. The games with the Flames are scheduled to be shown on ESPN+.
