GREENVILLE — Long Beach State scored early and maintained the lead in a 3-2 win over East Carolina on Saturday in the Keith LeClair Classic.
The Dirtbags (6-3) scored an unearned run in the top of the first after leadoff batter Nick Marincontz reached on an error and came home on a double down the left field line by Rocco Peppi.
Eddie Saldivar had a bunt single for Long Beach State with one out in the third. Peppi had an infield hit to put runners at first and second. The Dirtbags went ahead, 2-0 on an RBI single up the middle by Johnathon Long.
Peppi doubled in the fifth and reached third on a wild pitch. He scored on another wild pitch.
ECU (6-3) scored its runs in the fifth. A bases-loaded walk to Jacob Starling got the Pirates within 3-1 and a wild pitch allowed Joey Berini to score.
Carter Spivey (0-1) started and went four and one-third innings for ECU. Zach Root held Long Beach State hitless over the last three innings with four strikeouts.
Jacob Jenkins-Cowart went 2-for-4 as the Pirates were limited to five hits, none for extra bases.
Dirtbags reliever Sky Wells (1-0) was credited with the win.
Indiana (5-5) topped Georgetown, 4-3, in the first game Saturday. The Hoosiers play Long Beach State on Sunday at 11 a.m. ECU takes on the Hoyas (6-4) at 3:30 p.m.
Long Beach State is 2-0 in this year’s event. The Pirates and Indiana are each 1-1. Georgetown is 0-2.
