GREENVILLE — East Carolina got early power from Zach Agnos and Bryson Worrell in subduing Houston, 5-3, on Friday night at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The nation’s best current winning streak improved to 13 games.
Agnos led off the bottom of the first with a home run to center field and ECU stayed ahead the rest of the way.
Worrell blasted a round tripper to left with one away in the first for a 2-0 advantage. The Pirates led 3-0 in the second after Agnos had an RBI double. A run-scoring single by Lane Hoover brought in Agnos for a 4-0 ECU lead.
Joey Berini’s RBI single in the eighth gave the hosts a 5-3 advantage and closed the scoring.
The Pirates improved to 37-18 overall and 19-4 in the American Athletic Conference.
Ryan Hernandez provided a highlight for Houston (34-21, 13-10 AAC) with a 2-run homer to right center in the fifth.
The win went to Josh Grosz (3-5), who started and went four and one-third innings. Ben Terwilliger pitched the last two innings for his fourth save after relief stints by Trey Yesavage and Garrett Saylor.
ECU goes for a sweep of the 3-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
