GREENVILLE — East Carolina scored in each of the first five innings in taking a 7-2 American Athletic Conference win over South Florida on Friday night.
Pirate pitchers C.J. Mayhue (4-1) and Garrett Saykor, who notched his fourth save, made the steady offensive production work as ECU improved to 32-18 overall and 15-4 in the AAC, two games ahead of Houston (34-16, 13-6 AAC).
Saylor went six innings, allowing three hits with one unearned run. He walked one and struck out six. Saylor yielded five hits and one earned run while fanning four without a walk over the last three innings.
Zach Agnos went 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, three runs and two RBIs in the leadoff spot.
Lane Hoover doubled in the first and scored on a double by Jacon Jenkins-Cowart to put the Pirates ahead to stay in the bottom of the first.
ECU added lone runs in each of the next four innings. Josh Moylan had a solo homer in the second. Bryson Worrell had a sacrifice fly in the third. Jacob Starling scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and Worrell had another sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Agnos hit a 2-run homer down the left field line in the seventh,
The second game of the series with USF (26-23, 6-13) is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m. at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
