MEMPHIS — East Carolina expanded its lead in the American Athletic Conference to two games Saturday with an 8-5 win at Memphis as Central Florida and Houston were dealt league losses.
The Pirates improved to 29-18 overall and 13-4 in league play. UCF and the Cougars are each 11-6 in the AAC.
ECU looks to sweep the 3-game series with the Tigers (21-23, 5-12) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Zach Agnos opened the game Saturday with a double and moved to third on a ground out by Lane Hoover. Agnos scored on a ground out by Brysin Worrell and the Pirates led the rest of the way.
ECU went up 3-0 in the second on a bases-loaded walk to Alec Makarwicz and a fielder’s choice by Hoover that brought Josh Moylan home.
Moylan scored from third in the fourth on a ground out to the right side by Makarewicz.
The Pirates added three unearned runs in the seventh as Moylan had an RBI double and Ben Newton had a run-scoring single.
Worrell had a sacrifice bunt in the eighth that allowed Hoover to score.
Newton went 2-for-4. Worrell and Makarewicz each had a hit and two RBIs.
Ben Brooks had two hits with a 2-run double for Memphis. Zach Wilson was 3-for-5 and scored twice for the Tigers.
Trey Yesavage (1-0) got the win in relief and Ben Terwilliger picked up his first save.
