GREENVILLE — A 4-run third inning was more than enough support for East Carolina pitchers Jake Kuchmaner and Garrett Saylor on Friday in a 7-2 win over Saint Mary’s of California at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The Pirates went ahead to stay on a solo homer to left by Ryder Giles that provided a 1-0 lead in the third.
Lane Hoover’s RBI single brought in Bryson Worrell for a 2-0 ECU advantage. Sacrifice flies by Jacob Jenkins-Cowart and Zach Agnos extended the margin to 4-0.
Kuchmaner (1-1) allowed six hits in six innings with two earned runs, one walk and seven strikeouts. Saylor went the last three frames for his first save. He allowed one hit, no walks and struck out five.
Giles scored on a single by Hoover in the fourth for a 5-1 lead.
ECU added two runs in the eighth on a homer to right by Alec Makarewicz and a ground out-RBI by Josh Moylan that brought in Carter Cunningham.
Hoover had two hits as the Pirates improved to 8-6 going into a game on Saturday at 4 p.m. against the Gaels (12-2), weather permitting.
The start of Friday’s contest was moved up to 3 p.m. in deference to the forecast.
