GREENVILLE — East Carolina downed Rhode Island, 12-4, on a sunny Sunday at Clark-LeClair Stadium to complete a 3-game sweep in the season-opening series.

ECU scored three runs in the first on an RBI single by Seth Caddell, a bases-loaded walk to Zach Agnos and a sacrifice fly by Josh Moylan.

Freshman left-hander Carson Whisenhunt started and protected the early cushion with 10 strikeouts in four innings. He allowed three hits, a pair of earned runs and issued one walk.

The Pirates pushed the margin to 9-4 in the seventh when Ryder Giles came home on a hunt single by Worrell.

Skylar Brooks hit a 3-run homer to left in the eighth to complete the scoring.

ECU had a 12-6 lead in hits as Worrell, Caddell, Connor Norby and Agnos had two each.

Freshman right-hander Danny Beal held the visitors scoreless in the fifth and was credited with the win.
