
COLLEGE PARK, MD — Jake Kuchmaner pitched the first perfect game in program history as No. 14 East Carolina completed a three-game sweep at Maryland with a 3-0 win on Sunday.
Kuchmaner (2-0) struck out eight.
The sophomore left-hander from Waxhaw had a no-hitter for eight and two-thirds innings in his last start, a 3-2 win at Ole Miss on March 6.
Kuchmaner allowed one hit in five and two-thirds innings of relief at Duke on Tuesday as the Pirates absorbed a 7-2 loss to the No. 24 Blue Devils.
Kuchmaner threw 103 pitches Sunday, 66 for strikes. The Terps (10-8) had 10 fly outs and nine ground outs.
Kody Milton struck out swinging on a 1-2 pitch to end the game. Seth Caddell caught the masterpiece.
A crowd of 823 was on hand to see the gem unfold on Shipley Field at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium. The contest got underway at 1 p.m. and lasted two hours, 20 minutes.
Thomas Francisco had a 2-run double in the sixth to score Spencer Brickhouse and Turner Brown. Brickhouse led off the frame with a double to center and Brown singled to right. Francisco’s double to right with one out ended the day for Maryland starter Trevor LaBonte (1-1).
Caddell added a home run to left in the ninth.
Brickhouse and Brown were each 2-for-4 as ECU collected eight hits.
The Pirates (15-6) host UNC-Wilmington (11-10) on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
