OXFORD, MS — Left-hander Jake Kuchmaner of East Carolina had a no-hitter for eight and two-thirds innings as the Pirates won 3-2 at Ole Miss on Wednesday.
A Swayze Field crowd of 7,701 saw ECU’s Spencer Brickhouse hit a 3-run homer in the fourth inning.
Kuchmaner struck out two to start the ninth before pinch hitter Michael Fitzsimmons drew a walk. Thomas Dillard had the first hit off Kuchmaner, a single to right center that moved pinch runner Anthony Servideo to third.
The Pirates (9-5) brought Alec Burleson to the mound and Dillard stole second. Tyler Keenan, who played at Cleveland High School near Clayton, singled to score both base runners and pull Ole Miss (9-3) within 3-2.
An error and a wild pitch put Keenan’s pinch runner at third with the potential tying run before Sam Lanier came on to get the final out on a foul pop and leave the bases loaded. Lanier earned his second save.
The 14th-ranked Pirates outhit the No. 9 Rebels, 5-2.
Bryant Packard, who was 2-for-3, started the fourth inning with a double to right center. Brady Lloyd singled and stole second before Brickhouse hit a 1-2 pitch over the right field fence.
Brickhouse was 2-for-3 with a double in addition to his second round tripper of the season.
Kuchmaner, a sophomore from Waxhax, allowed one hit, two runs (both earned) and struck out nine while walking one.
The Pirates have a three-game home series with Marist (4-5) starting Friday at 6:30 p.m.
