DURHAM — Duke scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and the No. 24 Blue Devils went on to a 7-2 win over No. 14 East Carolina at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday.
A 2-run double by R,J. Schreck completed the scoring for the Blue Devils (12-5) in the opening frame.
The Pirates (12-6) scored lone runs in the third and fifth innings
In the third, Turner Brown hit into a fielder’s choice that allowed Ryder Giles to score an unearned run. Alec Burleson had an RBI single to left in the fifth.
Rudy Maxwell had an RBI single for Duke in the seventh and Kyle Gallagher had a run-scoring double for the Blue Devils in the eighth.
Burleson had two of ECU’s four hits.
Gavin Williams (1-2) started and lasted one inning for the Pirates. Jake Kuchmaner turned in five and two-thirds innings of relief with six strikeouts.
Kyle Salley (1-0) got the win in relief.
The Pirates are on the road for a three-game series at Maryland starting Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Terps are 9-5 with a game at Delaware on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
