GREENSBORO — A single by Zach Houchins scored freshman
Kirk Morgan from third base with the winning run in the top of the 10th
inning and East Carolina topped host UNC-Greensboro 4-3 Wednesday for the
Pirates' first road win this season.
Nick Durazo retired the Spartans in order in the bottom
of the 10th for the save.
ECU (7-5) scored three runs in the fourth inning to lead
3-1.
Drew Reynolds started the big inning for the Pirates with
a single through the right side on a full count pitch. Houchins, who had
three of ECU's seven hits, doubled into right field. Ian Townsend walked to
load the bases.
A single by Luke Lowery to center field scored Reynolds
to tie the score. A single by Ben Fultz brought home two more runs.
The Spartans (5-6) scored single runs in the first,
seventh and ninth innings.
Reynolds (1-0) blew the save in the ninth but picked up
the win.
Tyler Bolton started and went six innings for the
Pirates. He allowed seven hits and one earned run with two walks and a
strikeout. David Lucroy got two outs in the seventh but yielded a hit and
was charged with an earned run. He walked one and recorded a strikeout.
Ryan Williams fanned three in an inning and one-third.
Reynolds yielded a pair of singles to UNCG to start the
bottom of the ninth. He battled back with a strikeout and a groundout. The
tying run scored on an error but the potential winning run was tagged out at
the plate to end the inning.
The schedule for ECU's Conference USA opening series at
home against Marshall this weekend has been adjusted due to the weather
forecast.
The Pirates will host a doubleheader Saturday beginning
at noon rather than play a game on Friday. The start time for Sunday is
still 1 p.m.
