HUNTINGTON, WV — East Carolina coach Jeff Lebo often says that basketball is a game of runs. Marshall made the last one Sunday to defeat the visiting Pirates 64-61.

A 3-pointer by Caleb White put ECU (16-14, 5-10 Conference USA) ahead 61-54 and completed a 14-2 Pirates spree with 4:32 to go, but ECU did not score again.

The Thundering Herd (10-20, 4-11) ended the game with a 10-0 run, taking the lead at 62-61 on a 3-point play by Ryan Taylor with 10 seconds remaining.

ECU finished the first half on an 18-3 run to lead 41-30 at the break. Marshall scored the first 16 points of the second half.

White led the Pirates with 23 points. Akeem Richmond had 15 points. Antonio Robinson added 10 points.

Michael Zangari had six points and five rebounds. Prince Williams added four points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and four steals for the Pirates.

Chris Thomas led the Herd with 17 points. Taylor had 15 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.

Marshall had a 44-28 rebounding lead.

Kareem Canty had 11 points and six assists in the win. Shawn Smith netted 10 points.

ECU completes the regular season at Old Dominion at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Monarchs topped the Pirates 81-70 in Greenville on Jan. 11. ODU (14-16, 8-7 C-USA) lost 74-63 at Charlotte on Sunday as the 49ers stopped a six-game losing streak.
