Ken Hawkins ECU 72 on Leo’s Field General Tells All

Thank you for publishing this article again. I read it in 2007, but all of us with ECU connections need to be made aware of the efforts of so many on our behalf. My late father in law, R. Frank Everett, from Martin County, and a former State Legislator, and a WWII battlefield commissioned Marine Captain, was a good friend of Leo Jenkins. He, along with many others worked behind the scenes, to enlist support for the nursing and medical schools at ECC. Robert Morgan, also along with many others, was not limited by the height of his body, he overcame what he lacked in stature by the enormous size of his heart. He fought tirelessly along with Jenkins, Futrell, Sanford, Furgurson, and many more for what was right and just. The ECU Brody School of Medicine and the former Pitt Memorial Hospital, currently Vidant, have been a God Send to the people of Eastern North Carolina who otherwise would have to go to Duke or UNC Hospitals for major surgeries and/or other serious medical issues. I agree with Don Tyson that Morgan was a real PIRATE!

Danny Whitford on Leo’s Field General Tells All

Don: I appreciate your comment. Few people younger than about 60 have a grasp of this important history about ECU's fight to serve the region and the state. I can personally attest that the article, in its original print format and in a couple of subsequent online versions, has drawn more interest than any other story we've run in Bonesville's 20-year existence. — Danny Whitford, Editor

Thank you for running this again. It was great to here about the fight to bring the medical school to Greenville !! That's the Spirit of The East and saga of a real PIRATE!

Petey on ECU rallies past Elon

Our starting outfielders are batting between .350 and .400 on a 13-3 team. Yet you want to replace one with a player with 10 AB's? Cliff's on top of it, trust him.

Karin on Bulls top ECU in OT

I was at the game and was surprised we didn’t drive the basket and get fouled. We’re pretty good from the foul line and that was wasted with only four attempts. I do love the potential I see but would love to see some three point shots made that I see made in practice!

Irish Spectre on Bulls top ECU in OT

"USF was 20 of 27 at the free throw line while the Pirates were four of six." 27 FT chances vs. 6, far and away the difference maker, and EXACTLY what I hate about basketball, the sport that far more than any other major sport is affected by grossly subjective refereeing. It's no coincidence that it was the home team that had 4 1/2 times more chances from the stripe. The word is "travesty."

don tyson on Pirates find different ways to win

Coach Godwin does the things required to build a program. There is a culture with Pirate baseball, it's not just on the diamond, it's off field attitudes and classroom. These are truly student athletes that we are proud of.

Worked with him as a Graduate Assistant best and most humbling experience. Hope that the bridge can be mended.

Richard Pitts & Susan Pitts on Young Pirates growing up in spurts

Great analysis and overview. Would love to see Minges filled up for these guys as that place has potential to be a true home court advantage. J Gardner has been a true Workhorse with an exceptional Leadership attitude and mentality. Huge Props to him

Boro on Time to rebuild a bridge

Class of 70 here....We have had many coaches since my graduation in 1970. I thank all of them for contributing to our football program at ECU. Ruffin was right up there with the best of them. I hope the wounds inflicted on him are healed and he would welcome an Olive Branch.
