A pair of key East Carolina players picked up honors when Conference USA
handed out its annual baseball awards on the eve of the league tournament at
Kinston.
Pirate slugger Darryl Lawhorn was named
Freshman of the Year and was awarded spots on both the All-Conference USA
First-Team and the All-Freshman Team, the league office announced Monday.
ECU pitching ace Sam Narron, a left-hander
from Goldsboro, was named Second Team All-Conference.
Lawhorn, a first baseman with fielding and
throwing skills that allow him to be shifted to other positions when the
need arises, leads the team with a .413 batting average. He has broken the
school's freshman season records for hits (90), home runs (16), RBI (56),
and total bases (155).
A product of Wilmington, Lawhorn is eight
hits and 13 total bases shy of ECU's season records in both of those
categories. His hit total is tied for the conference lead, and he ranks
second in batting, on base percentage (.502) and total bases.
Lawhorn has started every game for the
Pirates as a freshman and was named C-USA Hitter of the Week on April 8 for
his performances against Elon, Campbell and league rival Houston.
Narron, a junior, has been a consistent
leader of the Pirate pitching staff, compiling a 7-3 record with a 3.10
earned run average in 12 appearances. He has struck out 57 batters this
season while allowing only 10 walks.
