Sam Narron

KINSTON — If 8⅓ innings of three-hit ball is any indication, Sam Narron's bout with tendonitis appears to be over.

The Goldsboro southpaw baffled Texas Christian Wednesday night as East Carolina knocked the Frogs into the losers bracket of the Conference USA Tournament with an old-fashioned 5-1 whipping.

It was the first appearance for both teams in the tourney, which is being hosted by East Carolina at Grainger Stadium.

The final result amounted to payback of sorts for the Pirates, whom the Frogs swept in a three-game series on ECU's home field during the regular season.

ECU led from start to finish, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first and pushing another across in the second to gain a quick three-run advantage.

The Pirates added two more runs in the sixth to build the lead to 5-0 before TCU answered in the bottom of that inning with its lone score of the evening, which was unearned.

Narron — sidelined the last two weeks while nursing a sore arm to recovery — appeared strong and in command from start to finish. He retired the only batter he faced in the ninth before being relieved by Neal Sears, who got the final two batters out on fly balls.

Warren Gaspar, Jedd Sorenson, Darryl Lawhorn and Ryan Jones each had two hits and ECU banged out 11 as a team and kept runners in scoring position much of the game.

TCU entered the league's postseason bash as the No. 3 seed, while ECU, which had lost 8 of its last 12 games, was seeded 6th.

The Pirates advance to a winners bracket game tonight at 7:30 PM game against No. 7 seed South Florida, which shocked second-seeded Louisville, 10-0, Wednesday afternoon.

The Frogs and Cardinals tangle in today's early game, which starts at 12:30 PM, while top-seeded Houston and No. 4 seed Southern Miss, both winners in Tuesday games, will battle at 4:00 PM.
