GREENVILLE — Darryl Lawhorn, the rookie from Wilmington who arrived at
East Carolina with a lively arm and burst onto the scene with an even
livelier bat, keeps piling up the honors.
The New Hanover High product was named Tuesday to the National Collegiate
Baseball Writers Association's third-team All-America squad — the first time
time an ECU freshman has earned All-America honors.
After being recruited as a relief pitcher/infielder, Lawhorn's hitting
prowess led to his inclusion in the everyday line-up — mostly at first base
— during a season in which he emerged as the Pirates' most potent offensive
weapon.
Lawhorn, who recently shared Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National
Freshman of the Year award with Rice's Phillip Humber and Vincent Sinisi,
finished the 2002 campaign with a .416 batting average, 17 home runs and 68
RBIs, all ECU freshmen records.
Conference USA's Freshman of the Year and a first-team All-C-USA member,
Lawhorn established ECU single season records for hits (104) and total bases
(179) and became the only player in school history to collect over 100 hits
in a season.
Six other players from C-USA landed spots on the NCBWA team: Houston
pitcher Brad Sullivan was named to the first team; Tulane second baseman
James Jurries, Houston shortstop/pitcher Jesse Crain and Texas Christian
outfielder Terry Trofholz were second team selections; and Houston catcher
Chris Snyder and Louisville outfielder Mark Jurich joined Lawhorn on the
third team.
Of the 54 players on the first, second and third teams, more than 40
percent (22) hail from C-USA or Carolinas schools.
