NCAA baseball berths
dominated by the few
©2002 Bonesville.net
A handful of power conferences and Sun Belt states raked
in the lion's share of the berths in the NCAA's postseason playoffs.
Conference USA and The Old North State were among the
beneficiaries.
Four leagues — out of 30 which compete in Division I
baseball — combined to nail down more than a third of the spots in the
field of 64. The SEC, with seven bids, will field the most
postseason teams, while C-USA, the ACC and the Big 12 will each have
five squads involved in this weekend's regional mini-tournaments.
Conversely, 17 conferences gained only a single berth —
the one that is reserved for each league's conference champion.
East Carolina, which likely would have landed an
at-large bid otherwise, yanked C-USA's automatic ticket to the dance
away from the league's regular season champion, Houston, in the
championship game of the conference tournament. The league's at
large-invitees were the Cougars, Tulane, South Florida and first-timer
Louisville.
The CAA, of which ECU was a member through last season,
placed only two schools in the playoffs — James Madison and Virginia
Commonwealth — and both were slotted in the same Columbia, SC, regional
as the No. 3 and 4 seeds, respectively.
The distribution of bids is even more skewed in
geographic terms, with five states being home to 30 schools which made
the postseason cut. Florida will have nine teams in various regionals,
California follows with seven, Texas with six, and North Carolina and
Louisiana with four apiece.
