NOTES FROM ECU AND BEYOND...
Compiled from staff reports
and electronic dispatches
Tickets
for Troops promotion expands
The Tickets for Troops
campaign in conjunction with East Carolina's home game with Marshall on
Nov. 11 has been expanded to include matching tickets for donated
tickers, according to an announcement from ECU's athletic media
relations department.
Pirate fans and supporters are
asked to purchase $15 tickets in support of Military Appreciation Day with
the tickets being donated to members of the military serving in Eastern
North Carolina.
"We have had tremendous
support for the Tickets for Troops campaign so far and I'm excited to
announce that ECU will match each ticket donated," said assistant athletic
director Scott Wetherbee. "We want to provide the opportunity for any
service man or woman to be able to attend this game as a thank you for
everything they do for our country."
To participate in Tickets for
Troops, visit the Tickets for Troops icon at
ecupirates.com or call the ECU athletic
ticket office at 1-800-DIAL-ECU.
The Pirates play Marshall in
their final home game of the year on November 11 at 1:00 p.m. Some of the
scheduled events associated with the Military Appreciation Day: a pre-game
flyover; a small American flag giveaway; military displays at gates; toys
for tots at gates; military dignitaries recognized on the field and a
patriotic medley performed by The Marching Pirates.
Another C-USA honor for ECU's Icenhower
East Carolina's Christie
Icenhower claimed this week's Conference USA diver of the week honors after
she placed first on both the one-meter and three-meter boards in a tri-meet
with College of Charleston and Gardner-Webb.
This is the third time the
junior from Lawrenceville, NJ, has earned the league's weekly award.
Icenhower is unbeaten in dual meet competition this season, cliaming first
place on both the one and three-meter boards in a dual meet against Davidson
two weeks ago.
Southern Methodist's Anja
Carman takes this week's C-USA Swimmer of the Week award after capturing
three first-place finishes and leading her team to the SMU Women's Swim
Classic title. The No. 8 Mustangs scored 327 points to defeat No. 14 Florida
State, No. 13 Wisconsin, Alabama, Virginia Tech and LSU.
Icenhower and her ECU
teammates resume competition at William & Mary on Friday.
Report: Davis would have
interest in Tar Heels
The carousel of
possible candidates to replace John Bunting as head coach at
North Carolina has started to turn with at least one big name
throwing his hat in the ring, according to a Fayetteville
Observer report by Sammy Batten.
Marvin Demoff, the agent for
former University of Miami and Cleveland Browns coach Butch Davis, said his
client would have an interest in the North Carolina job, wrote Batten, who
also authors a recruiting column for Bonesville.net.
But Demoff said Davis hasn’t
been contacted by the Tar Heels.
“He does want to coach again
in 2007,’’ Demoff said.
Davis is best known for
restoring the glory to a Miami program between 1995 and 2001 that had been
stricken by NCAA violations and banned from bowl participation. He directed
the Hurricanes to a 51-20 record in six seasons, including an 11-1 mark in
2000 before jumping to the NFL and the Browns.
Other names that have surfaced in
media speculation about potential successors to Bunting include some with area ties:
Washington coach Tyrone Willingham, a Kinston native and Jacksonville High
School alumnus; former East Carolina coach Steve Logan, who has been
successful as an offensive coach in NFL Europe and carved a niche as a
popular broadcaster since his departure from the Pirates; and Navy coach
Paul Johnson, a native of Newland and graduate of Western Carolina.
North Carolina Athletic
Director Dick Baddour
announced Sunday that Bunting would not be retained
for 2007 after failing to produce a consistent winner in six seasons.
