Army six wins away from San Diego trip

The Poinsettia Bowl has reached an agreement with Army that guarantees the Black Knights a berth to the postseason bowl game if Army is bowl eligible this fall, according to a release on the U.S. Military Academy's athletic website.

The Poinsettia Bowl will kick off the bowl season on Dec. 19 at Qualcomm Stadium, pitting a representative from the Mountain West Conference against an at-large opponent. Army would fill that at-large spot should the Black Knights qualify for postseason play.

An Army appearance would mark the second time in the two-year history of the bowl game that a service academy would participate in the game. Navy defeated Colorado State 51-30 in front of 36,842 fans during the inaugural contest last December.

East Carolina opens its season at Navy on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Rivers will get starting assignment for Chargers

Two years on the bench behind Drew Brees gave Philip Rivers a chance to watch, listen, learn and test his patience, according to a USA Today report.

Rivers will be moving into a starting role for the Chargers and said he plans to play with the emotion that characterized his college career at N.C. State.

While with the Wolfpack, Rivers set an NCAA record with 51 consecutive starts at quarterback.

With Campbell in goal, ECU shuts out Camels

Tara Shaw, Jillian Moore, and Kelly Lightfoot all netted goals in a 5-0 East Carolina women's soccer win at Campbell on Monday.

East Carolina (1-1) racked up 16 shots, 13 of which were on goal, according to an account on ecupirates.com.

Amber Campbell got her second straight start and did not allow a goal in her 77:27 as the goalkeeper. Freshman Jen Kurowicki got her first experience in a collegiate game, closing out the final 12:33 to complete the shutout.

ECU will finish up its road trip on Friday at 7 p.m. at Western Carolina.

The Pirates' first home game is Sunday at 1 p.m. against Charlotte.
