One day after 38,806 fans showed up at
Williams-Brice Stadium to catch a glimpse of Steve Spurrier's new-look
Gamecocks in South Carolina's
nationally-televised "Garnet and Black'' game,
another episode of trouble has cropped up for the program.
Two South Carolina football players
were arrested early Sunday in the Columbia area and charged with simple
marijuana possession, raising the total number of Gamecocks arrested since
the end of last season to 11.
Sophomore linebacker Josh Johnson,
sophomore defensive back Ty Erving and another 18-year-old man were cited
not far from the university after an officer smelled marijuana coming from
the parked car the players were sitting in, according to a police report.
The officer ordered Johnson, Erving and
Justin Johnson out of the car, according to the report, and found a small
amount of marijuana.
The athletics department should receive
a copy of the incident report Monday. Athletic director Mike McGee will
review it before deciding whether the players should be disciplined,
spokeswoman Michelle Schmitt said Sunday night.
Nine other Gamecocks players have been
arrested on charges ranging from domestic violence to grand larceny.
