RALEIGH — North Carolina State hired
Steve Dunlap as defensive coordinator Monday.
Dunlap replaces Reggie Herring, who
left the Wolfpack in early December to take the same job at Arkansas. Under
Herring, the Wolfpack led Division I-A in total defense last season,
allowing an average of 221 yards.
Dunlap was defensive coordinator and
linebackers coach at Syracuse in 2004, and served as assistant head coach in
the two seasons before that. He also spent 17 seasons at West Virginia,
serving as defensive coordinator from 1991-2000 under Don Nehlen.
Mountain West adopts instant replay for 2005
COLORADO SPRINGS — The Mountain West
Conference will experiment with instant replay next football season,
joining the Atlantic Coast Conference
in using a system based on one the
Big Ten employed last year.
The conference board of directors voted
in favor of replay at its Jan. 28 meeting. Last week, athletic directors and
coaches discussed the format and assigned a subcommittee to work on the
replay system.
All but seven of the league's games
were televised last season, leading conference officials to believe there
will be enough video footage to use an effective replay system.
Under the Big Ten's system, a technical
adviser watched the game from the press box and notified officials on the
field if he saw something questionable. Play was halted while the adviser
reviewed the call using video from the television feed.
The NCAA is in the process of
establishing guidelines for replay. Any conference wishing to use instant
replay must submit its system to the NCAA by June 1.
