Fresh off another week of eye-popping
performances, East Carolina sprinter LaShawn Merritt was named Monday by the
United States Track Coaches Association as the Athlete of the Week for NCAA
Division I track and field.
It is the second week in a row the
freshman from Portsmouth, VA, has been selected as the recipient of the
national honor.
Merritt won the 400 meters in a
collegiate indoor record time of 44.93 seconds at the
Powered by Tyson Invitational in
Fayetteville, Ark. on Friday.
The performance also set a new world
indoor junior mark and is the third-fastest indoor 400-meter time in
history. Michael Johnson's world record of 44.63, set in 1995, and Johnson's
subsequent 1996 time of 44.66 were the only two occasions on which faster
times have been posted.
On Saturday, Merritt went on to win the
200 meters in 20.40 seconds which also set a new indoor world junior record.
Merritt's times in both events met the
NCAA automatic qualifying standard.
The USTCA honor went to Merritt the
previous week after he turned in what was then the fastest 400-meter dash
time (45.94) in the world so far this season at the Gator Invitational in
Gainesville, FL, on Feb. 6.
East Carolina's track and field team
will take this weekend off in preparation for the Conference USA
Championships, which will be held on the University of Houston campus Feb.
26-25.

AP basketball poll: Charlotte
cracks Top 25
Illinois was a unanimous No. 1 in The
Associated Press' college basketball for the third straight week Monday,
while Charlotte moved into the Top 25 for the first time in six years.
The Fighting Illini (25-0) beat
Michigan and Wisconsin last week to remain the only unbeaten team in
Division I. Illinois received all 72 first-place votes from the national
media panel to stay No. 1 for the 11th consecutive week.
Charlotte (17-4) moved into the
rankings at No. 23 after five wins in its last six games, with the 49ers'
only loss during that stretch coming at East Carolina. The 49ers' other
losses this season were to Rutgers, Alabama in triple overtime and
Cincinnati.
The last time Charlotte was ranked came
in the final week of the 1998-99 season when it was 24th.
The Top 25 was also dotted with several
other teams from Conference USA and the Carolinas:
North Carolina (20-3), which lost at
Duke and won at Connecticut last week, dropped from second to fourth.
Wake Forest moved up one place to fifth
while Duke was ranked No. 7.
Louisville came it at 12th and
Cincinnati hung onto a spot in the rankings at No. 24.
