CHICAGO – Draelon Burns has signed to play basketball at DePaul beginning with the 2004-05 season, Blue Demons head coach Dave Leitao announced last week.

Burns, a 6-4, 200-pound native of Milwaukee who will have four seasons of eligibility with the Blue Demons, spent his senior year at the Laurinburg Institute in Laurinburg, NC, where he averaged nearly 27 points per game and helped the program achieve the No. 1 spot in the national prep school polls.

Ranked as the 104th-best player in the nation by Prep Stars, Burns was a second team All-State pick as a junior at Milwaukee’s Custer High School where he averaged 17.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.4 steals per game. In the summer prior to his senior season, Burns was the leading scorer at the Las Vegas “Big Time” AAU Tournament.

DePaul is coming off a 22-10 season that saw the Blue Demons win the Conference USA regular season title and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1989.

Long Beach State ace captures Golden Spikes

Long Beach State pitcher Jered Weaver, a first round pick in last month's Major League Baseball draft, has been awarded the 2004 Golden Spikes Award as the nation's top amateur baseball player.

A unanimous first-team All-American, Weaver went 15-1 in the recently-concluded season with a 1.62 ERA. He struck out 213, leading the nation in both wins and strikeouts.

Weaver has also won the Dick Howser Award and received top honors from Baseball America and the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association. He also is a finalist for the Roger Clemens award.

"I never expected any of these awards to come, so to even be among the top five amateur players in the country, that's a very big honor," Weaver said.

The Anaheim Angels selected Weaver with the 12th overall pick in the June draft.

Past winners of the Golden Spikes Award, which is presented by the Major League Baseball Players Association, include Mark Prior, Pat Burrell, J.D. Drew, Robin Ventura and Will Clark.
