BIRMINGHAM — Heisman Trophy winner Pat
Sullivan said his body is rid of all signs of cancer.
Sullivan, now UAB's offensive coordinator, was diagnosed with cancer
following neck surgery in September.
"I've had a complete response to the treatment," Sullivan told The
Birmingham News for its Saturday edition. "The doctors told me they
saw no signs of cancer cells."
Doctors will monitor Sullivan over the next five years.
Sullivan, who won the Heisman as Auburn's quarterback in 1971, was
diagnosed with cancer after doctors found the disease at the base of
his tongue and in lymph nodes in his neck. His cancer condition,
known as squamous cell carcinoma, is serious, but there is a 65- to
70-percent recovery rate.
Sullivan vowed shortly after the diagnosis that he would "whip"
cancer and began chemotherapy and radiation treatments in December.
He missed only one of UAB's games last season while undergoing
treatment.
ACC scheduling snags nix FSU-A&M series
TALLAHASSEE — Florida State and Texas A&M have canceled
their home-and-home series in 2005 and 2006 because of scheduling conflicts.
Both teams were in need of an extra home game for the season that they were
serving as the road team. Texas A&M was the host in 2005 while Florida State
was to be the host in 2006.
The two schools were unable to flip-flop the games because of Florida
State's scheduling conflicts related to the expansion of the Atlantic Coast
Conference.
Neither team has signed a replacement.
Spared Gillen to appraise Cavaliers' program
RICHMOND — One day after being told he would keep
his job, Virginia basketball coach Pete Gillen said he will evaluate the
entire program this offseason.
"It's a business," Gillen said during a conference call from San Antonio,
adding that athletic director Craig Littlepage did not require Gillen to
fire any assistants.
"No one put a gun to my head and said, 'You have to
make changes,"' Gillen said.
Under Gillen, Virginia has gone 104-78 in six seasons but has failed to make
it to the NCAA Tournament since 2001.
This season, the Cavaliers beat George Washington 79-66 in the first round
of the NIT, then lost 73-63 at Villanova. Virginia finished 18-13.
Gillen said his team needs to improve its quickness and talent, which might
mean including incoming freshmen in the rotation next year.
"They will contribute immediately," he said. "How much they'll play, I don't
know."
