East Carolina's football team might have
fallen backwards in the win-loss ledger in 2003, but the Pirates made
notable strides forward in their representation on the All-Conference USA
team.
Brian Rimpf headlines a group of six ECU
players who were named Wednesday to the first, second or third squads after
balloting by C-USA's 11 coaches and media members from each league city.
Rimpf, a senior offensive tackle, was named
to the first team for the third year in a row, continuing the unbroken
string of postseason conference honors that began for the Raleigh native his
first season as a Pirate. He was a member of the league's all-freshman team
in 2000.
Freshman punter Ryan Dougherty (Orlando,
FL) doubled up on honors, earning a first-team spot on the all-conference
squad as well as being named to the all-freshman team.
Senior wide receiver Terrance Copper
(Washington), junior running back Marvin Townes (Warrenton) and sophomore
linebacker Chris Moore (Havelock), who earned all-freshman recognition in
2002, were named to the all-conference second team.
Senior center Doug White (Norristown, PA)
landed a spot on the third team, boosting ECU's representation on the three
All-C-USA teams to six players.
Though ECU finished 1-11 this season, the
five Pirates named to the first two teams almost doubled the number of
all-conference honorees from ECUs' 4-8 squad of 2002, when only a first and
second team were named.
Rimpf and punter Jared Preston earned spots
on the 2002 first team and running back Art Brown, who is expected to return
to action for the Pirates in 2004 after sitting out this season with an
injury, was named to the second team.

The All-Conference USA freshman team was
also announced on Wednesday, with ECU equaling its haul of honors on that
squad from a year ago.
Joining Dougherty on the all-freshman team
were tight end Josh Coffman (Palmetto, FL) and cornerback Erode Jean (Fort
Pierce, FL).
Pirates who made the freshman team last
season were Moore, defensive lineman Guy Whimper (Havelock) and defensive
back Reicko Jones.

Rouse pays price for breaking Herrion law
East Carolina's basketball team suffered
another loss of sorts less than 24 hours after its Tuesday night defeat at
George Mason.
With the the Pirates facing another road
game — at Seton Hall on Saturday — ECU coach Bill Herrion announced
Wednesday that sophomore forward Corey Rouse has been suspended from the
team.
Herrion's announcement noted the
disciplinary measure was meted out for a violation of team policy and that
the suspension would be for an indefinite period of time.
A 6-7 sophomore from Kinston, Rouse has
played in all four games during ECU's 3-1 start, averaging 5.5 points and
4.8 rebounds.
Rouse's biggest nights of production came
in the Pirates' first two games. He grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds in the
opener against Campbell and scored a career-high 11 points in the second
game versus UNC Pembroke.
In the more recent pair of outings, Rouse
failed to score in a home game last Saturday against Coastal Carolina and he
was held to 2 points in ECU's 76-65 loss to the Patriots the night before
the suspension was announced.
ECU reels in seven baseball recruits
Three pitchers are among a
group of seven high school seniors who have signed to play baseball at East
Carolina in the 2005 season, second-year Pirates coach Randy Mazey has
announced.
In a departure from most
recent classes, only one of the signees is from North Carolina. Following,
in alphabetical order, are brief sketches of each of the incoming recruits:
-
Harrison Eldridge is an
outfielder from Knoxville, TN. He was the lead-off man for defending
Class AAA state champion Farragut High School. He hit .446 as a junior
and set the Tennessee single-season record for runs scored (75).
-
Woods Fines, a
right-handed pitcher from Pittsboro Northwoods High School, is the only
instate player to sign with the Pirates in the early period. He
took part in last summer's the East Coast Professional Baseball Showcase
in Wilmington.
-
T.J. Hose, a right-handed
pitcher from Hagerstown, MD, earned all-state honors as a junior at
North Hagerstown High School last season.
-
Chad Jennings is a
right-handed pitcher from Laurel, MD, who is a senior at Riverdale
Baptist. He played summer league ball with Hose.
-
Dale Mollenhauer, a
shortstop from Gibsonia, PA, earned all-state honors as a junior at Pine
Richland High School. He also played fall and summer league ball for the
Mid-Atlantic Rookies.
-
Ryan Peisel, a first
baseman from Marietta, GA, helped Lassiter High School to a region
championship last spring. He played summer league ball with East Cobb
baseball and helped East Cobb to the Perfect Wood Bat world championship
this past summer. He took part in last summer's the East Coast
Professional Baseball Showcase in Wilmington.
-
Brad Stephenson is a
catcher from Chesapeake, Va., is a senior at Great Bridge High School.
He took part in last summer's the East Coast Professional Baseball
Showcase in Wilmington.
The Pirates will open the
2004 season with a 12-game home
stand starting on Feb. 13 with a visit by UNC Asheville.
