Prominent Greenville resident Steve Logan
is stepping a bit further into the broadcasting realm. The former East
Carolina football coach will be joining Henry Hinton as co-host of the
'Midweek Tailgate Show,' which is simulcast each Wednesday from 6:30-7:30
p.m. during football season on Greenville Cable 7 TV and radio station WCZI
98.3 FM.
Logan will debut on tonight's program and
he is expected to be a part of the show in the future with some regularity,
though the exact number of shows he will appear on is not firm. He plans to
focus on topics relating to college athletics each week. On tonight's
program, Logan will interview Cincinnati football coach Rick Minter, whose
Bearcats will host ECU in the teams' Labor Day season opener.
After winning more games and racking up a
longer head-coaching tenure than any of his predecessors in Pirate football
history, Logan has become involved in the sports broadcasting profession. He
has done work with Fox Sports over the summer and is contracted to be a part
of the broadcast team this fall for Army's regional network TV coverage.
Logan was forced to step down as ECU's
skipper last December after 15 years as a staff member, including the last
12 as head coach. He is scheduled to continue receiving his annual $200,000
ECU base salary until the year 2006, with earnings he generates from other
employment during that period deducted from the school's obligation
Injury no barrier to recognition for Art Brown
In an ironic twist of fate, East Carolina
senior tailback Art Brown has been named a preseason candidate for a
prestigious honor less than two weeks after being sidelined for the season
by a knee injury. Brown is one of four Conference USA running backs named to
the watch list for the 2003 Doak Walker Award, awarded annually to the
nation's top college running back.
In addition to Brown, Mewelde Moore
(Tulane), Lonta Hobbs (TCU) and DeAngelo Williams (Memphis) are among 39
contenders for the honor. The board of directors of the SMU Athletic Forum,
which sponsors the award, will select eight semifinalists on November 19,
and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will vote on the
winner in late November.
Brown, a 1,000-yard rusher in 2002 and a
preseason selection to the All-C-USA team, will use his medical redshirt
this year and have another shot at earning recognition and awards in 2004.
Southern Miss, LSU schedule two-game series
HATTIESBURG — Louisiana State will make a
two-game appearance on Southern Mississippi basketball schedule, starting
with a Dec. 20, 2003 game in Baton Rouge, La.
That first game is set for 3 p.m., at the 14,164-seat Maravich Center on the
LSU campus, with the second game of the series slated for the Mississippi
Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, on Dec. 18, 2004, according to a statement issued
by Golden Eagles head basketball Coach James Green and USM athletics
director Richard Giannini.
Giannini said the games will benefit the
Golden Eagle program.
"We work continually to enhance our
schedule, and this two-game addition will draw national attention," he said.
"And in the second year, the game will give Hattiesburg-area fans the
opportunity to gather with our Gulf Coast students, faculty, alumni and fans
to continue and enhance the success we enjoyed with the Houston game there
last season."
Southern Miss and LSU have played three
times previous to this year's game, with the Tigers winning all three games.
Their most recent meeting was in the first
game of the 1989-90 season in the opening round of the preseason Big Apple
NIT Tournament. The Golden Eagles lost that game 91-80, against a team that
featured Shaquille O'Neal, (then) Chris Jackson and Stanley Roberts, all
future NBA standouts.
O'Neal was limited to 10 points in that
game, while Jackson led all scorers with 37. Southern Miss put four players
in double figures, led by center Daron Jenkins, who had 25. Future NBA
standout Clarence Weatherspoon contributed 17 points and a game-high 14
rebounds as a USM sophomore.
The two teams first played in 1930-31 in a
game won by LSU, 46-35. LSU also posted a 107-79 victory in a 1972-73 game,
Dale Brown's first year as head coach of the Tigers.
