GREENVILLE — East Carolina didn't have to
look far or convene a search committee to find a veteran stand-in to fill
its vacant athletic director's position. Nick Floyd, the university's senior
associate director of athletics, was named interim athletic director on
Monday.
Floyd, who joined ECU in 2001 after serving
as an associate commissioner of Conference USA, stepped into the role only
three days after Mike Hamrick accepted the AD position at the University of
Nevada-Las Vegas.
Chancellor William V. Muse, in announcing
Floyd's appointment, said ECU will initiate a search for a permanent
director after the conclusion of the football season.
"I am confident that during the interim
period, Nick Floyd will provide strong, capable leadership for Pirate
athletics," Muse said. "He is familiar with our program and he is a seasoned
athletics administrator."
Before joining the staff of C-USA, Floyd was senior associate athletic
director at Southern Mississippi, where he served in various administrative
capacities in the Golden Eagles athletic department for 12 years.
Floyd is a graduate of Clemson University
and holds a master of business administration degree from the University of
Mississippi.
C-USA saddled with another Friday night
game
Both Cincinnati and South Florida each had
one made-for-TV Friday game already designated on its 2003 schedule. The
Bearcats and Bulls learned in recent days that they will have another.
ESPN2 will televise the USF-UC football
game on Halloween Friday, October 31, at 7:30 p.m. (EST), Conference USA has
announced.
The change helps ESPN fill a gap created
when the network
agreed less than two weeks to move the Brigham
Young-Boise State game scheduled for that time slot ahead one
day to Thursday night.
Ironically, the Bearcats were the visiting
team last season for a Friday, December 6 game against East Carolina. That
televised contest was at the center of the so-called
'Friday Night Fight'
controversy, which was ignited when then ECU athletic director Mike Hamrick
abruptly breached an agreement with the N.C. High School Athletic
Association and scheduled the televised home game in conflict with the state
prep playoffs.
In announcing the latest shifting of a game
to a Friday night, C-USA officials indicated they believe the negatives of
collaborating with TV executives in the move are offset by the positives.
“We realize that this date and time are not
ideal for many of the local fans," league commissioner Britton Banowsky said
in a statement. "However, we hope all concerned can appreciate the value in
being able to expose the teams and student-athletes to such a large
audience.”
The UC-USF telecast, which will originate from Raymond James Stadium in
Tampa, will give C-USA a record 12-game national package with ESPN. The
contest was moved from its originally scheduled date of Saturday, November
1.
USF kicks off its first season as a
football member of C-USA on Saturday, August 30, at Alabama at 3:00 p.m.
(EDT) on ESPN. The Bulls will make their other Friday night appearance on
ESPN when they host Texas Christian on October 10, at 8:00 p.m. (EDT).
Cincinnati, the league’s defending
co-champion, opens its season against visiting East Carolina on Labor Day
Monday, September 1, a game which will air on ESPN at Noon (EDT). The
Cincinnati-Louisville contest on Friday, November 28, will be seen on ESPN 2
at 11:00 a.m. (EST).
League official Teter accepts Cincinnati position
CINCINNATI — Brian Teter, a veteran
associate commissioner of Conference USA, has been named associate athletic
director at the University of Cincinnati. Teter, who has spent the past nine
years in conference administration, will initiate new efforts in external
and media relations in his duties for the Bearcats.
Teter was a member of the senior staff at
C-USA the past eight years, overseeing media relations, television, men's
basketball administration and football bowl relations in addition to serving
as an external liaison for the league in other areas. He previously was
assistant commissioner of the Great Midwest Conference (1994-95) for a year
and helped guide the league through its transition to Conference USA.
Teter has worked in intercollegiate
athletics for more than 22 years. A 1985 graduate of Illinois State, he
served as assistant sports information director at ISU for two years while
earning his master's degree. He was assistant SID at Cincinnati for three
years (1987-90), assistant SID at Indiana for the 1990-91 school year and
sports information director at Miami (Ohio) University for three years
(1991-94).
A native of Aurora, Ill., Teter is married
to the former Karen Roell, a former UC women's basketball player from
Harrison, Ohio. The couple has three children: Kristen (6), Brandon (4), and
Lauren (2).
