Early TV exposure plentiful for C-USA teams

Four nationally televised games highlight Conference USA's Labor Day weekend schedule. On Saturday, South Florida makes its debut as a football member of C-USA with a game at Alabama (3:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN). On Sunday, Louisville and Kentucky battle for bragging rights in the Bluegrass State (6:30 p.m. EDT on ESPN2). Four of the leagues teams will be laboring on Labor Day Monday, when ESPN puts on day-night C-USA doubleheader (East Carolina at Cincinnati, Noon EDT, and Texas Christian at Tulane, 8:00 p.m. EDT).

Nevels wins scramble for Army starting QB job

WEST POINT — It's been a highly competitive battle, but head coach Todd Berry ended the five-way tussle for Army's starting quarterback job on Monday when he named Reggie Nevels to open beneath center for the Black Knights' season opener versus Connecticut on Sept. 6.

When preseason camp opened nearly three weeks ago, the starting quarterback race remained wide open, a five-way fight between returnees Nevels, Zac Dahman, Laron Bybee, Matt Silva and Connor Crehan. Berry and his staff sliced the list of potential starters to three (Nevels, Silva and Bybee) following the team's first intra-squad scrimmage last weekend, then named Nevels the starter and Bybee the top backup earlier today based on last week's practice and scrimmage sessions.

"I didn't really have a timetable set," Berry explained. "Obviously we knew that we were going to try to name one this week. I wanted to see that there was enough separation, and I think there's been enough separation over the last couple of weeks to be able to name one now. We feel good about it. I think it was becoming very apparent to everyone, not just the coaches, but everyone on the team."

Green Wave elects team captains

NEW ORLEANS — The Tulane University football team had its first Louisiana Superdome practice of the year on Monday after which head coach Chris Scelfo announced the team's 2003 captains, as voted on by the players.

This year's team captains are all seniors as quarterback J.P. Losman and running back Mewelde Moore will lead the offense and defensive linemen Daniel Nevil and Terrence Tarver are the defensive captains. Losman and Moore were also captains last season.

"These four guys have all taken different paths to reach the highest award a player can achieve," Scelfo said. "To be voted a team captain by your peers is a great honor."

Attrition depletes Billikens' projected hoops roster

ST. LOUIS — Saint Louis University head men's basketball coach Brad Soderberg announced Monday that guard Brandon Morris did not meet NCAA academic eligibility requirements for a junior college transfer and will not be with the Billikens in 2003-04. During the 2002 fall signing period, Morris signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University and play basketball for the Billikens. Morris spent two years at Iowa Western Community College after playing high school basketball at Kenosha (Wis.) St. Joseph's where Soderberg first spotted him.

SLU also will be without the services of injury-plagued junior swingman Floyd McClain (Houston, Texas), who has withdrawn from the University and left the basketball program for family and personal reasons. After playing in only 21 games during his freshman year, McClain sat out both the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons while recovering from injuries. He averaged 2.0 points and 1.2 rebounds in 7.1 minutes per game for his career.
