Apprehension in Provo, UT, about staging a
televised college football game on a Friday night has been addressed by ESPN
executives.
The game between Brigham Young and Boise
State that was originally scheduled for Friday, October 31, will instead be
played one day earlier.
ESPN recently contacted both schools to see
if each would approve switching from Friday night, which happens to coincide
with Halloween, to Thursday. The change also will involve moving the game's
telecast to ESPN from ESPN2.
A barrage of criticism surrounded last
season's ESPN-inspired move of the East Carolina-Cincinnati game in
Greenville to a Friday night, which positioned the contest in direct
conflict with the North Carolina high school playoffs.
By making the change for the BYU-BSU
matchup, the network diffused uneasy feelings among BYU officials, though
the school's reasons for preferring to avoid the Friday date were not
centered on high schools' interests.
"Initially, we were a little reluctant to
play a home game on Halloween night," BYU athletic director Val Hale said.
"When ESPN asked if we would be willing to play on Thursday, instead of
Friday, we jumped at the chance."
Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET at
LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, UT.
'Cocks-Razorbacks tussle set for prime
time
FAYETTEVILLE, AR — Arkansas has moved its
Nov. 8 game against South Carolina up two days to accommodate a Thursday
night telecast on ESPN. The Nov. 6 game, at War Memorial Stadium in Little
Rock, will kick off just after 7:30 p.m. ET.
Arkansas coach Houston Nutt said Monday
that he doesn't mind playing on Thursday night even though it will mean a
short rest following a game at Kentucky. This will be Arkansas' first
Thursday night game since opening the 2001 season with a 14-10 win over the
University of Nevada-Las Vegas, also at Little Rock on ESPN.
"The thing you worry about is the quick
turnaround, but it's even for both teams," Nutt said. "You get a little bit
of a break in there if you can just get the turnaround. The quick turnaround
is what's tough and that's what makes coaches apprehensive about it."
South Carolina will come off a game against
Ole Miss, but will receive extra time to prepare for a key conference game
against Florida. Arkansas will have a couple of extra days to prepare for
nonconference opponent New Mexico State.
Monday's announcement gives Arkansas its third televised game for the
season. ABC Sports is to televise the Texas game to about half the nation
Sept. 13 and CBS is to air the season finale at LSU on Nov. 28, the day
after Thanksgiving.

available to take phone calls from viewers.
