East Carolina has been busy on two fronts
in the football recruiting wars, achieving successes relating to both its
2003 and 2004 classes.
A dispatch from East Carolina's media
relations office confirms
Bonesville.net's report earlier this week
that an Oklahoma prep star has made a last-minute decision to join the
Pirates' crop of incoming freshmen. Eric Johnson will be on ECU's roster for
the upcoming season, making him the 21st recruit to sign under first year
head coach John Thompson.
Johnson, a 6-2, 205-pound running back from
Okmulgee High School in Okmulgee, OK, rushed for 1,233 yards on 241 carries
his senior year while also playing defensive back. A quick and physical
player, Johnson ran the 100 and 200 meter-dash, while also throwing a
personal best of 55-feet in the shotput for the Bulldogs track team.
"We are thrilled to get a player like
Eric," Thompson said. "He has a lot of speed and is a physical player coming
from a real good program under Coach Danny Morgan. He has a tremendous work
ethic and we are excited to have him join our program."
Johnson marks the fifth defensive back to
sign with the Pirates. The secondary was an area which Thompson felt he
needed to strengthen when he took over the Pirate program in December of
2002.
Meanwhile, according to various published
accounts, Thompson and staff are reaping results from their 2004 recruiting
efforts. The Orlando Sentinel reported that Boone (FL) offensive lineman
Mike Williams (6-3/270) has orally committed to play at East Carolina. He
was an all-county selection last season, according to the paper.
Williams could eventually wind up being a
key blocker for highly-regarded Charlotte Olympic quarterback Antonio
Miller, who verbally committed to the Pirates last month.
