Redshirt freshman
guard Dimitri Batten scored a game-high 18 points, grabbed 9
rebounds and converted a pair of clutch free throws with 9 seconds
left to help Old Dominion prevail over East Carolina 63-58 Tuesday
night in Norfolk.
The Monarchs led 25-23
at the half after both teams struggled to put the ball in the
basket. ODU shot 37.0 percent from the floor and and 44.4 percent
from the charity stripe before intermission, while the Pirates hit
only 28.6 percent of their field goal attempts and 33.3 percent from
the free throw line.
ECU moved ahead 32-30
on a pair of free throws by junior guard Corvonn Gaines a little
more than three minutes into the second frame and increased the
margin to 42-35 on a jumper by junior guard Shamarr Bowden with
12:01 remaining.
Then the Pirates went
cold and the Monarchs responded with a 15-2 run to take a 50-44 lead
at the 7:51 mark.
ECU fought back within
two on three occasions, the last time on two free throws by senior
forward Austin Steed that closed the gap to 59-57 with 48 seconds
left.
After ODU senior guard
Marquel De Lancey scored a driving basket with 17 ticks remaining,
junior guard Miguel Paul converted one of two free throws to pull
the Pirates within three with 11 seconds left.
Batten was fouled two
seconds later by freshman guard Paris Roberts-Campbell and put the
game out of reach by converting both free throws.
Redshirt junior
forward Nick Wright and senior forward Chris Cooper joined Batten in
double figures with 12 points apiece. Cooper led the Monarchs in
rebounding with 11.
Bowden came off the
bench to lead the tenuous ECU offensive effort with 14 points.
Senior forward Darrius Morrow had 11 points, Paul added 10 points
and 7 assists and Steed recorded 11 rebounds for the Pirates.
East Carolina returns
home for a 5 p.m. matchup on Saturday with Charlotte.
