Pirates storm back to hijack UCF

East Carolina overcame a 14-point deficit in the second half and survived a frenetic, final-seconds bid by Central Florida to send the game into overtime to capture its fourth Conference USA victory of the season Tuesday night in Orlando.

Junior forward Jamar Abrams sank 6 of 10 3-point shots and scored 20 points to help the Pirates (10-19, 4-11 C-USA) avenge a a 67-56 defeat by the Golden Knights in Greenville on Feb. 2.

Freshman guard Erin Straughn connected on a three-pointer with 13:07 remaining and made a layup off a steal 46 seconds later to ignite the ECU rally.

The Pirates outscored UCF 18-2 over the next 5:39 to convert a 49-35 deficit into a two-point advantage. Abrams drilled a trey at the 7:28 mark to push ECU in front 53-51.

East Carolina extended its working margin to as much as 7 before the Golden Knights (13-16, 5-10 C-USA) mounted a counter-attack in the final four minutes.

Sophomore guard Isaac Sosa made a three to pull UCF within 2 with 6 seconds left. Knights freshman guard R.J. Scott then stole the inbounds pass but UCF was unable to get off a shot in the scramble as the clock ticked down.

Sophomore forward Darrius Morrow had 14 points and junior guard Jontae Sherrod added 10 to join Abrams in double figures.

Junior forward A.J. Tyler scored 16 points and junior guard Taylor Young contributed 10 to pace the Knights.

Central Florida led at the half 34-25.

East Carolina closes out the regular season slate on Saturday when it hosts league rival Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles thumped the Pirates 68-53 in Hattiesburg on Jan. 23.

The Pirates will play in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament on Mar. 10 at the BOK Center in Tulsa. The top four teams in the 12-team league will have first round byes.
