Abrams shines but Pirates
lose

East Carolina junior
forward Jamar Abrams was the star of the game but Central Florida was
the team that stood out as it captured a 67-56 Conference USA victory
Tuesday night in Greenville.
Abrams' game-high and
career-high 28 points were not enough to shield his cold-shooting,
error-prone team from suffering its second loss in a row and seventh in
its last eight games.
While Abrams was making 11
of 17 field goal attempts, including 5 of 7 from three-point range, the
Pirates (7-15, 1-7 C-USA) were collectively off the mark, shooting only
38.9 percent (21-54) from the floor and 54.5 percent (6-11) from the
free throw line while giving up 20 turnovers.
The Golden Knights
connected on 42.3 percent (22-52) from the field and 83.3 percent
(15-18) from the charity stripe while turning the ball over only 12
times.
Junior guard Taylor Young
scored 16 points, reserve sophomore guard Isaac Sosa had 14 and junior
forward A.J. Tyler added 10 to help UCF (11-11, 3-5 C-USA) snap a
three-game losing streak.
The Golden Knights led at
the half 24-23 after trailing by as much as 6 in the middle of the first
frame. They took advantage of three ECU turnovers in the first four
minutes of the second half to help establish a 7-point working margin.
The Pirates closed the gap
no closer than 6 the rest of the way and trailed by as much as 16 with
2:49 to go.
East Carolina travels to
Huntington, WV, for a Saturday league game with Marshall before
returning home for another conference contest next Wednesday against
Tulane.
