Southern Miss outscored East Carolina 34-13 in the final 12:24 to seize control of what had been a back-and-forth contest and claim a 68-53 Conference USA victory Saturday evening in Hattiesburg.

Junior forward Gary Flowers, junior guard R.L. Horton and junior forward Torye Pelham each scored 12 points and senior guard Buchi Awaji and junior guard Sai'Quon Stone added 10 apiece for the Golden Eagles. Horton, Pelham and Awaji came off the bench to make their contributions.

A jumper by Flowers ignited the surge that converted USM's six-point deficit into the comfortable final margin. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Golden Eagles (11-8, 1-4 Conference USA).

Junior forward Jamar Abrams scored a game-high 18 points and freshman guard Corvonn Gaines, making his first start, had 9 points for East Carolina, which lost its fifth game in a row and seventh of its last eight.

Southern Miss out-rebounded the Pirates 34-21 and won the scoring battle in the paint 42-20.

The Golden Eagles led at the half 28-26, but after intermission trailed on four occasions and was tied on two others before exploding to take command of the game.

For the third straight game, ECU was without the services of sophomore forward Darrius Morrow and freshman guard Wakefield Ellison, who were suspended on Jan. 13 by ECU coach Mack McCarthy for a violation of team rules.

The Pirates (6-13, 0-5) have little time to retrench as they make the quick hop from Hattiesburg to New Orleans for a Sunday afternoon game (3 p.m.) against league foe Tulane.
