Junior guard Justin Hurtt
scored a career-high 34 points to lead Tulsa to an 85-73 Conference USA
victory over East Carolina Saturday night in Greenville. The win sealed
the Golden Hurricane's fourth straight 20-win season.
Hurtt put on a one-man
show at one point in the second half, outscoring the Pirates 10-4 to
give the Golden Hurricane (20-9, 9-5 C-USA) a comfortable 60-47 working
margin with 11:04 remaining. After the outburst, ECU (9-19, 3-11 C-USA)
never got closer than 9 again.
Hurtt converted 11 of 16
field goal attempts, including 7 of 11 from beyond the arc.
The game's outcome and
Hurtt's performance diverted a bit of the spotlight away from a career
night by Brock Young, who paced the Pirates with 30 points on 10 of 20
from the floor and a perfect 9 of 9 from the free throw line. The junior
guard scored 15 points in each half.
Senior center Jerome
Jordan had 15 points and 10 rebounds, sophomore forward Joe Richard
added 13 points and senior guard Ben Uzoh contributed 10 points for
Tulsa.
ECU sophomore forward
Darrius Morrow scored 15 points.
Tulsa led at the half
36-29.
The Pirates begin the
final week of the regular season on Tuesday in Orlando with a re-rematch
against conference foe Central Florida. The Golden Knights
defeated ECU 67-56 in Greenville on Feb. 2.
East Carolina closes out
the regular slate on Saturday when it hosts league rival Southern Miss.
The Golden Eagles
thumped the Pirates 68-53 in
Hattiesburg on Jan. 23.
The Pirates will play in
the first round of the Conference USA Tournament on Mar. 10 at the BOK
Center in Tulsa. The top four teams in the 12-team league will have
first round byes.
