Blazers burn Bucs late

UAB erupted for a 28-6
second half run to transform a close battle into an 82-62 rout of East
Carolina in a Conference USA matchup Saturday night in Greenville.
Senior guard Robert Vaden
scored 18 points, all in the second half, and helped fuel the Blazers'
breakout from a 42-42 tie with 14:46 left to a commanding 70-48 lead
less than nine minutes later.
Freshman forward Cameron
Moore also scored 18 points, senior guard Channing Toney finished with
17 and junior forward Howard Crawford had 13 for the Blazers (20-9, 10-4
C-USA).
Vaden, who transferred to
UAB from Indiana after his sophomore year, went on a spree for 16 of his
points during the game-deciding surge.
Sophomore wing Jamar
Abrams led East Carolina with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard
Sam Hinnant and sophomore guard Brock Young added 10 points each for the
Pirates.
The win was UAB's seventh
in its last eight game. The Pirates (13-15, 5-10) have lost four in a
row.
The teams were knotted at
halftime 34-34.
East Carolina has a week
to regroup before concluding the regular season at Central Florida next
Saturday. The Knights (16-12, 6-8), who suffered a 67-62 loss at
Marshall on Saturday, face Tulane on the road on Wednesday before
returning home to host the Pirates.
