STORRS, CT — Garrett Brooks
walked in the top of the 10th inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly
by Eric Tyler as the Pirates took an American Athletic Conference series
with a 4-3 win at Connecticut on Sunday.
ECU
topped the Huskies 7-3 on Friday
before the hosts
evened the series by the same score on
Saturday.
Pirates coach Cliff
Godwin brought Jacob Wolfe to the mound in the bottom of the 10th
and he retired the Huskies (25-15, 6-6 AAC) in order for his first
save.
UConn used four hits in
the bottom of the ninth to score two runs and tie the score at 3.
The Pirates ended the ninth with a tagout at the plate to prevent
the winning run.
Jeff Nelson made the
throw from right field and Travis Watkins applied the tag. Nelson
went to right after Bailey Sugg pinch hit for Parker Lamm in the top
of the ninth.
After Brooks walked,
Charlie Yorgen had a one-out single down the right field line that
allowed Brooks to go to third.
Tyler's fly to left
brought in the deciding run.
The Pirates (24-16, 6-6)
never trailed, taking a 1-0 lead in the fifth and going on top 3-0
with a pair of runs in the seventh.
Brooks doubled with two
out in the fifth and scored when Hunter Allen followed with a single
through the right side.
Lamm walked with one
away in the seventh and Brooks had an infield hit. A walk to Allen
loaded the bases and Lamm scored on a wild pitch.
Brooks was out at home
on a fielder's choice but Allen subsequently stole home for a 3-0
ECU lead.
Reid Love turned in a
quality start for the Pirates, going six and one-third innings. He
allowed six hits, one earned run and struck out eight while walking
two.
Evan Voliva (1-0), the
fifth of six ECU pitchers, picked up the win.
Getting two hits each
for the Pirates were Allen, Yorgen and Brooks.
ECU hosts N.C. State
(21-16) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Wolfpack dropped the deciding
matchup in a three-game series at Notre Dame, 7-2, on Sunday.
The Pirates
lost 7-0 to NCSU in
Raleigh on March 3.
