GREENVILLE — East Carolina
recorded a pair of shutouts in a doubleheader sweep of Monmouth on
Saturday at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Sophomore left-hander
Evan Kruczynski pitched a two-hit shutout in the first game and the
Pirates scored twice in the eighth inning for a 2-0 win.
The offense came alive
much earlier in the second game as ECU scored six times in the first
inning en route to a 9-0 victory.
Jacob Wolfe, Luke Bolka,
Nick Durazo and Cameron Snow combined for the shutout in the second
game.
Kruczynski threw 97
pitches, 72 for strikes. He walked one and struck out seven.
The Pirates scored twice
in the eighth inning in the first game. Eric Tyler singled to center
field with one out and Parker Lamm pinch ran for him. Bryce Harman
singled to left field and a throwing error by the left fielder
allowed Lamm to come home with the game's first run. Harman went to
second on the miscue and took third when Travis Watkins singled
through the left side. A fielder's choice by Garrett Brooks that
retired Watkins at second allowed Harman to come home.
Watkins went 2-for-4 as
the Pirates collected nine hits, all singles.
ECU (8-5) outhit the
Hawks (0-8) by a 15-3 margin in the second game.
Reid Love led off the
bottom of the first frame with a home run to left field to set the
tone. Tyler and Harman followed with singles before Travis Watkins
singled to score Tyler. Jackson Mims and Charlie Yorgen had RBI
singles. Brooks drove in two runs with a single to center field.
Tyler doubled in the
second inning and scored on a hit by Harman for a 7-0 lead.
ECU added two unearned
runs in the fourth as Tyler, Mims and Yorgen had singles. Monmouth
had an error and a wild pitch.
Tyler and Mims finished
the second game with three hits each. Harman, Yorgen and Brooks had
two hits apiece.
Wolfe started and went
six innings. He allowed three hits and struck out six. Bolka, Durazo
and Snow pitched one inning each and didn't allow a hit. Bolka and
Durazo each had one whiff. Snow struck out the side in the ninth.
A 1 p.m. game today will
complete the nonconference series.
