Uniform mix-up has everyone wearing white

NEW YORK (AP) For the first couple of minutes of Tuesday night's second NIT semifinal everyone in Madison Square Garden was cheering for the team in white.

Both Syracuse and South Carolina brought their home white uniforms and it wasn't discovered until the teams took the floor for pregame warmups.

Syracuse was supposed to be wearing its road orange uniforms and a student manager was dispatched to get them.

``We got a police escort for the manager to get back to the hotel,'' NIT executive director Jack Powers said, referring to the trip of about 15 blocks in midtown Manhattan.

The game, televised nationally by ESPN, started on time at 9:30 p.m.

The crowd was buzzing over the uniform mix-up at the start and then was cheering when the Syracuse manager came through the players' tunnel with the bag of road uniforms.

At the first stoppage of play, 2:41 in and with the score 2-2, a media timeout was called and the Syracuse players changed their tops on the bench, keeping the white shorts.

Syracuse, which led 29-26 at halftime, came out for the second half wearing its full orange road uniforms.

The Orangemen might have fared better without the halftime change of attire as South Carolina forged ahead and held on to whip the 'Cuse, advancing to Thursday's title game against Memphis.

The Tigers beat Temple 78-77 in the evening's first semifinal.
