The skirmishes that will lead to the College World Series begin Friday with 16 double-elimination regionals featuring 64 teams. The opening day pairings for the four-team mini-playoffs include Tennessee against East Carolina (ESPNU) and North Carolina against Virginia Commonwealth (ESPN+) in the Chapel Hill regional.
The Pirates and Tar Heels are two of four regional teams from North Carolina. The others are N.C. State and Wake Forest.
The national seeds and regional hosts are UCLA, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Auburn, UNC, Texas, Alabama, Florida, Southern Mississippi, Florida State, Oregon, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Mississippi State, Kansas and West Virginia.
Florida has made 18 straight regional appearances. Other teams with postseason bid streaks include Oklahoma State (13), Southern Miss (10), Arkansas (9), ECU (8), Oregon State (8) and UNC (8).
ECU and FSU will seek to alter their past postseason patterns for the better. The Pirates have not reached the College World Series in 35 previous regional appearances while the Seminoles have yet to win the national championship in 61 appearances in the NCAA postseason.
The selection of the eight super regional hosts will be announced on Tuesday.
The super-regional champions will advance to the College World Series in Omaha beginning June 12.
